Sample questions with answers

These are the questions in the free test above, with answers. Try the test first. You'll learn more by getting some wrong.

1. Total float is the amount of time an activity can be delayed without delaying:
Answer: The project completion date. Total float protects the finish date. Free float is the delay possible without delaying the early start of any successor.
2. Earned value is $90,000 and actual cost is $100,000. The cost performance index (CPI) is:
Answer: 0.90 (over budget). CPI = EV ÷ AC = 90,000 ÷ 100,000 = 0.90. Below 1.0 means you're spending more than the value of work earned.
3. Earned value is $45,000 and planned value is $50,000. The schedule performance index (SPI) is:
Answer: 0.90. SPI = EV ÷ PV = 45,000 ÷ 50,000 = 0.90, which means the job is behind schedule.
4. When operating a crane near power lines up to 50 kV, the minimum clearance that must be maintained is:
Answer: 10 feet. 29 CFR 1926.1408 Table A: 10 feet for lines up to 50 kV. Greater voltages require more clearance.
5. Daily inspections of excavations and protective systems must be made by a:
Answer: Competent person. 29 CFR 1926.651(k)(1): a competent person inspects before work starts and as needed through the shift.
6. A stairway, ladder, ramp or other safe means of egress is required in trenches 4 feet or deeper so that workers travel no more than how far laterally to reach it?
Answer: 25 feet. 29 CFR 1926.651(c)(2): no more than 25 feet of lateral travel.
7. A stairway or ladder must be provided at all points of access where there is a break in elevation of:
Answer: 19 inches or more. 29 CFR 1926.1051(a): 19 inches or more, unless a ramp, runway, embankment or personnel hoist is provided.
8. On a construction site, a fire extinguisher rated at least 2A must be provided for each 3,000 sq ft and placed so travel distance to it is no more than:
Answer: 100 feet. 29 CFR 1926.150(c)(1)(i): travel distance to the nearest extinguisher must not exceed 100 feet.
9. Fall protection is required for employees on a scaffold more than how high above a lower level?
Answer: 10 feet. 29 CFR 1926.451(g)(1): 10 feet for scaffolds (the general construction trigger is 6 feet).
10. Scaffold planks must extend over their end supports by at least:
Answer: 6 inches. 29 CFR 1926.451(b)(4): at least 6 inches, and no more than 12 inches unless cleated, restrained or guarded.
11. Activity A takes 5 days and activity B takes 3 days. B can start 2 days after A starts (start-to-start with a 2-day lag). If A starts on day 0, the earliest B can finish is:
Answer: Day 5. B starts on day 2 (0 + 2 lag) and lasts 3 days, so it finishes on day 5.
12. A bar chart showing activities against a time scale, without logic ties, is a:
Answer: Gantt chart. A Gantt (bar) chart shows durations on a calendar but doesn't show dependencies. CPM/precedence diagrams show logic.
13. Ground-fault circuit interrupters on construction sites are required to protect workers from:
Answer: Electrical shock from ground faults. 29 CFR 1926.404(b)(1): GFCIs (or an assured equipment grounding program) protect workers on 120-volt, 15/20/30-amp receptacle outlets.
14. Under OSHA's construction standards, who is responsible for providing required personal protective equipment at no cost to employees in most cases?
Answer: The employer. 29 CFR 1926.95: the employer pays for required PPE, with narrow exceptions such as ordinary safety-toe footwear and prescription safety eyewear.
15. A list of items to be completed or corrected before final completion is called the:

General, building and residential contractors (Division I) must pass three open-book exams: Business and Finance, Contract Administration and Project Management.
